April Newsletter

Monthly Newsletter from Gisela Robinson

APRIL 2024 – # 1

Welcome to my first newsletter !

I am writing a monthly newsletter to share with you what I have been up to in the month, what I am working on at the moment, and what events I will be in during the upcoming month.

The idea is not only to keep you updated on my work, but also to give an insight into other things that I enjoy, hoping that you may enjoy them too.  So as well as painting tips, materials recommendations, drawing exercises, sales, promotions, exhibitions. etc.; I will cover recipes, recommendations of books / movies, events, interesting places to visit and much more.  I will be inviting fellow artists to collaborate, so we can all learn about their work and be inspired.

I would love to get your feedback, your ideas of what would you like to see and read in future issues, and anything you would like to share related to the topics we have been talking about, or anything else you think may be of interest to the wider art community.  For this, I invite you to leave a comment below or contact me directly on info@giselarobinson.com.  I am really looking forward to hearing from you !

xx

To start, I would like to introduce myself, so here we go:

Meet the Maker… Me !

Hello to all ! I’m Gisela, the creative mind behind the illustrations you’ll find here on my website.  I’m a freelance illustrator and artist from Argentina -Buenos Aires- who, after falling in love with Shropshire, is now based in Shrewsbury with my Salopian husband, our three children, and dog – Gaia.  I studied design, media & communication and worked for many years in marketing for HSBC.  After having my children, I wanted to work from home and retrained by studying illustration and then specialising in editorial illustration.

Initially I designed illustrations for publishers and children’s magazines; but I now also have a range of merchandise based upon my illustrations – items such as stationary, tote bags, pouches, magnets, pocket mirrors, greeting cards and postcards.  I also sell originals and prints of my art work in my

online shop as well as local outlets in Shropshire such as the VAN Art Gallery, Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery and QUBE Art Gallery Oswestry among others.  I also paint commissioned works including murals, some of which can be seen in the streets of Shrewsbury and in local shops.

I love using different mediums in my artwork, such as watercolour, gouache, acrylic, ink, graphite as well as digital.  If I had to choose my favourite, it would be watercolour and gouache. I just love them !

Regarding inspiration, everybody asks where we find it, and I think that this is something that we all need to train.  Inspiration is there, we just need to know how to look at things.  My inspiration comes from nature, literature, memories, and especially things that touch my heart.  I love when somebody tells me that one of my illustrations reminds them to their own children, or themselves; this is where the circle closes and is a magic moment to me.

When away from my art studio, you may find me reading, cooking, spending time with my family & friends or walking in the beautiful Shropshire countryside.

What I have been up to

March has been a busy month itself ! I have been working on new artwork and preparing for two big events coming in April.

Workshops at Schools

I was delighted to be invited to Coleham Primary School, in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, during the International Book Week.  I had a chat about illustration with Year 3 and 4, and discovered very inquisitive minds asking interesting questions about my work as an illustrator.  In the afternoon we had some workshops with year 3 and made book covers.

I was blown away by their creativity and talent ! Have a look at some of their work.  We finished the day with a book market, where I met the rest of the students and parents. Thank you Coleham Primary School´s children, teachers, staff and parents for such a fantastic day !!

Behind the Scenes of Shropshire Artisan Showcase

Some of you may already know that I will be taking part on the Shropshire Artisan Showcase 2024, as one of the eight artists & makers in Shropshire selected to showcase our creations in the Darwin Shopping Centre.

Together with my fellow artisans in this adventure, and Shropshire Growth HubBuy From Creative Agency & Darwin Shopping Centre, we have been very busy for some months training, meeting, designing and dreaming together with this collective showcase that we are bringing to you.

Coffee and Ideas

If you don´t know my fellow artisans, I invite you to follow them, because they are amazing and inspiring:

Work in Progress: Midnight Feast

Midnight Feast is painted in gouache, with lots of details in the larder and a warmth palette.  It is filled with memories of my childhood holidays with my cousins in the countryside.

Chérie Jerrard

If you are local, for sure you haven´t missed Chérie´s artwork in the streets of Shrewsbury.  It is so difficult to define Chérie, as she is not just an amazing artist, she is pure creativity and the brain of many artistic projects, among these is the DRAWN.

We have a ping-pong of questions & answers to get to know a bit more about Chérie:

Tell as something about yourself

I have been chasing a creative path my whole life but it has taken so many different routes it´s hard to know which one to mention.

Your Inspiration

Life – I´m a weirdo people watcher

Favourite Media

Everything, Multi Media to the highest level … I just can’t stick at one thing. For a long time I pursued digital art but now I’m more hands on.

How do you stay motivated and proactive ?

If I don’t push myself to follow what I love I might as well go and work anywhere. You need to work a lot harder to make very little money in the creative industry – it shouldn’t be that way but it is. You also need to sit back and do nothing so the ideas come but it’s really hard to do when there’s no guarantee of work at the end. It can mess with your head.

What are you working on at the moment ?

Art – I am working on a ’Scrawl’ subscription box. They want to create a box containing my favourite products for live sketching.

Commercial – Cherie did this has a new range I am hoping it will be ready in time for DRAWN

DRAWN – Too much to do as always it’s a race to opening day. I spend nights dreaming about the mundane stuff that no-one else sees.

…and it’s school holidays – Pearl isn’t lucky enough for me to be taking her anywhere but I do have some fun art projects for us to try ! You may notice I keep drawing her on my Chérie Jerrard instagram page !

Thank you Chérie for collaborating with us in this newsletter ! If you would like to know more about Chérie, have a look at her links below:

Thank you for reading and see you next month!
